For six years, from 1939 to 1945 the sprawling German Embassy on the Paseo de la Castellana 6 was the hub of vast Nazi operations in Madrid. Another 20 annexes in the city harbored activities of the Third Reich that included a huge culture center, a large German school, a Lutheran church, serveral news services, a travel bureau, a modern hospital and a dozen buildings containing the offices of German interests that ranged from the Sofindus financial conglomerate to the headquarters of the Gestapo.
Confronting this behemoth of Nazi power ando influence, which was staunchly supported by the Frango regime, were the counter-efforts of the Allies in Madrid, who desperately sought to combat the Fascists and prevent Spain from entering the war on de Axis side.
This is the story of that monumental struggle between the contending sides and the sites in Madrid where it unfolded, along with sketches of some of the people, on both sides, who were involved in the conflict.
